Ebay's New Price Match Guarantee Makes Sure Shoppers Get Lowest Prices On New Products
With the announcement today that eBay will offer a price match guarantee on tens of thousands of new products in the U.S. included in its eBay Deals, the company appears to be trying to update its image.
Long known for connecting consumers with used and collectible merchandise, eBay is now highlighting its large inventory of new items, which currently make up 80% of all merchandise available on the site, the company reports.
The eBay Price Match Guarantee promises that if a shopper finds a product in its eBay Deals for less at Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, Jet.com, HomeDepot.com, Sears.com, Target.com, Walmart.com, or Wayfair.com, eBay will issue a coupon for the difference in price to aid the buyer in matching the competitor's online price. The product must match the eBay Deal exactly in order to qualify for price matching, however.
Specifically, the process to request a price match is:
- Call eBay customer service to request a price match before purchasing the item.
- Provide eBay customer service with the website where the lower price was found.
- Once verified, the shopper will get an eBay coupon for the difference in prices that you can use towards the purchase of the item.
Ebay Deals consist of more than 50,000 new products in categories ranging from consumer electronics, to home and garden, to fashion. Prices are typically 20-90% off retail and include brands such as Adidas, Ray-Ban, and Dyson, among others. There is no membership required to take advantage of eBay Deals and they always ship free. Sellers participating in eBay Deals range from major consumer brands to smaller merchants looking to broaden their customer base, eBay explains.
In a press release, Hal Lawton, senior vice president of North America at eBay, said, "Our eBay Deals selection has grown exponentially since being launched in 2011. The vast majority of our deals are already lower priced or equal to our competitors, but if a shopper finds it for less, we'll gladly match the price of our competitors."
While this news helps to shine a spotlight on eBay's new goods, even eBay sellers specializing in used items appreciate the move. Jason T. Smith, star of Spike TV's "Thrift Hunters," long-time eBay seller and well-known eBay selling coach, says, "I love eBay's announcement of price matching on new items. I'm primarily a used item seller, and anything eBay does to get its name on the news and trending online is good for ALL ebay sellers.
Because eBay is 22 years old, their name has become ubiquitous with online selling, [just] as Kleenex has for tissue or Xerox has for photo copy. Because of that, people tend to forget to come shop on eBay for both new and used items. So when the powers that be do something like this, I'm happy because it refreshes the fact in people's mind to come shop on eBay."
