YOUR PAPER, DIGITAL

We all got used to, since school and university age, take notes on paper. Whether in conferences, business meetings or workshops, it was almost ubiquitous the use of notes books in several shapes and formats, since the pocket ones onto the bigger ones for those who wanted to include graphics or schemes in their notes.

By NUNO AFONSO

With the arrival of the smartphone and tablet age, the truth is many of us still didn't quit the usual paper note books – there is something special in paper: the touch of a pencil, a pen or a marker captivates us, in some cases it is believed to increase the power to concentrate in a way the digital option still can't reach.

The issue captivated Magnus Wanberg, founder of the Norwegian remarkable, a paper enthusiast who acknowledged that in modern age, as much as this can stimulate our brain and imagination, without restrictions or distractions, it also has a less practical side as they constrain the consultation of those same notes when they spread throughout several note books. As well as the frequent need to copy the notes into a readable format on a computer and the cost in material and environmental conscience inherent to the gesture of printing them and the catch that, when necessary they're never at reach.

Since 2013 reMarkable is dedicated to produce and perfect a unique technology of digital paper, creating a tablet with a digital surface and the due markers which will give the unique feeling of being able to write and draw as if you were using a note book and which will also work as a digital book reader.

In 2018 reMarkable remains as the only company to achieve the reproduction in a digital format of a realistic feeling of paper use, which has made easier the life of artists, writers, managers and readers all over the world.

The intention of the company and Norwegian technology is that the reMarkable is more than a mere reading apparatus; the design and its unique technology designed to replace the need to get books, documents, notes and sketch blocks with us when we go to any meeting or in the uses of everyday life.

The digital ink technology that tries to replicate the feel of the paper on a screen is not new, but given their costs, most of the tablets ended up replacing by plasma screens, LCD or led devices intended for reading only, like the Kindle, have kept the technology, but no major developments and with various limitations.

The format is the one of a conventional tablet for easy reading and experience of drawing or writing. It is slim and includes two tracks that allow the silicone to be used freely on any surface without slipping. Among the distinctions between this "tablet of pape" and the conventional screen with a PMMA cover that protects from wear and even water, it is extremely light and its battery lasts much longer than a conventional tablet – unlike competing devices and even the major part of mobile phones, the battery of the reMarkable has a range of three to four days, depending on the intensity of use.

For those who want to take notes or use the tablet to draw, it even includes the options of pencil, pen, two types of marker and an eraser. We highlight here the pencil option, once the digital pencil lets you do everything a normal graphite pencil would do: you can create shadows and the display recognises various kinds of pressure, such as on paper, by doing more or less force change the density and depth trace. Returning to the PMMA screen coverage, that reMarkable guarantees be "virtually unbreakable", the truth is that this tablet can handle well falls from heights in excess of 1,20 m, the equivalent of a use standing, without even generate a risk.
