These shoes were made for comfort.
In 1774, Germany, Johann Adam Birkenstock began the long line of shoemakers that would introduce comfortable walking to the world. 2To this day, the brand continues to base it's innovation in his ideal, offering many diferent styles of comfy sandals and shoes distributed in over 80 countries.
Birkenstock. When you say the word, what comes to mind is the shoe, not the brand. The superior quality of sandals and shoes, today spread all over the world, is well deserved: from the insoles, to the ecological concern, the brand thrives to produce the best and healthiest ways to walk.
With ten locations in Germany and continuously developing the production processes, it also supports Germany as a location for operations. As said by the brand itself, "BIRKENSTOCK products are, and will remain, „Made in Germany" – from the buckles all the way to the sole".
From raw to Comfort
Every 9 years, and no less, bark is extracted from the tree. This ensures that the tree will continue to grow and produce cork. Then, it is boiled, cut in strips from which bottle corks are extrated, and the leftover cork is ground up and sifted into small grains. Its high degree of elasticity, excellent cushioning traits and its outstanding insulation against heat, cold and moisture make it perfect.
Latex is the natural bonding agent for the cork footbed. The rubber tree, Hevea Brasiliensis, provides it, when its bark is scratched the rubber milk flows from it. This is a process carefully and responsibly conducted, in order to preserve the ecological cycle.
To enhance moisture absorption, and to stabilize our footbeds jute is used. This raw material is cultivated to be harvested, which means that no resources are wasted but especially grown for this purpose.
The Sole and the Foot.
Birkenstock goes even further to provide the comfort. Besides offering a footbed in two widths, the normal width for normal feet and the narrow width for particularly narrow feet, the uppers match the respective footbed widths to ensure an optimal fit. Adding the adjustable straps, it offers an almost individually personalized footwear. Plus, an elongated foot guide at the back of the shoe holds the feet firmly in the footbed. A perfect guide ensures a natural walking motion.
In the buckle department, birkenstock also ensures its quality. Each buckle is powder-coated to protect it against corrosion so it can withstand heavy stress and strains for many years. To make the buckles sturdier on the uppers, the buckles are clamped onto the material in four places, and are done so as to conceal the edges.
The soles are also very much considered in the Birkenstock values. They not only feature superb shock absorbing properties, they also even out imbalances of the walking surface thus averting any negative effects on one's posture.
