"REALLY" EAT EVERYTHING
Polish Biotrem has been gaining ground with an innovative idea that meets the concern of the ever growing ecological concerns of the current world, thanks to a process invented by Jerzy Wysocki the company is currently the only producer of eatable and biodegradable cutlery and tableware made from wheat bran in the world.
By NIGEL HAWTHORNE
The company already produces 15 million plates each year and is present on over 40 markets, with an extremely high growth potential given the current and overall hostility towards its plastic counterparts.
The Biotrem plant is located in Zambrów, Northeast Poland, and uses its own technology protected by several international patents to assure the exclusivity of its products and using the wheat that is locally produced – using non-Genetically Modified Organisms only – on an overall organic farming zone. The company also adopted a standardization of its production and the capacity to replicate its machinery, assuring that it can react on a fast and easy pace no any growths on demand.
Apparently, the process is extremely simple, using only wheat bran and small amounts of water. The trick is on the use of high temperatures and high pressure to compress the resulting wheat paste, turning it on a resistant, easy to transport product that can even be used in an oven without any degrading, allowing the confection of meat and fish dishes without losing any of its attributes. The dishes can also be created using other raw materials, such as cassava or kale, certainly already predicting its expansion towards the South-American and Asian markets. The use of wheat bran is due to its abundance and proximity within Polish territory.
The company makes a point on stating that its production process does not demand a large use of hydric nor mineral resources, it does not use any chemical compounds and is a far more sustainable and ecological alternative when compared with the conventional options in paper or plastic. A ton of wheat bran equals a production of 10,000 plates or bowls, depending of the size. Besides this the products are not only eatable but also biodegradable in case you might not want to consume it – through the composting process, these plates and cutlery degrade in full in just 30 days!
Biotrem's plates and bowls can be used in the oven up to 180 degrees Celsius and in the microwave up to 750W, you can use it to heat or even cook food, something that the paper and plastic options do not allow. The current offer includes plates of several dimensions (28cm, 24cm, 20cm), round 20cm bowls and oval 24cm by 16cm bowls and, of course, knives, forks and spoons. Besides standard plates and cutlery, Biotrem can also personalize its products having in mind medium to large dimension events and its use in restaurants that might wish to innovate its offers.
Biotrem's innovation already granted it European Union funding, both by the European Regional Development Fund and the European Funds for Smart Growth, making clear that besides being a great business idea it also meets the demands of the modern consumer's concerns through the use of ecological and abundant products (wheat bran is obtained while peeling the wheat used in flour, it's 30% of the grain and has to be dealt with in short term or it might degrade, although its eatable, most of it is discarded) this company also managed to contribute with new solutions for a more economical and sustainable consumption, hoping one day to replicate its factory on other continents, using local raw materials that might be currently overlooked.
