PRINTING THE MEMORIES
The apparent triumph of the digital world made mundane concerns such as the purchase of photographic camera films and the corresponding rationing of the pictures we took vanish.
By NUNO AFONSO
Currently, we are no longer limited to a few dozen photographs (24 or 36) given that, depending on the memory of each smartphone or digital camera, todays normal is taking hundreds or even thousands of pictures throughout the year. Unfortunately, this same ephemerality made that amongst the downloads, the limbo of files, the cloud uploads and memory cards we end up losing track of pictures that we truly wanted to save for life.
Paying attention to this detail, Fujifilm created Instax Share SP, whose SP-2 version is already available in the marked and with the promise of a SP-3 within a year or two with even more options for the user.
What are we talking about? Well, a portable printer aimed at smartphones that can print your pictures in 10 seconds, be it those stored on the memory of your smartphone or on the social networks you use. Now, whenever you want to immortalize a special moment you can print it right away!
This printer does not use paint, it's an actual instant film revelation technology by Fujifilm, all you need is a wi-fi connection and you will have an actual photograph obtained through light exposure to film instead of the inkjet or laser prints on waxed paper you would print at home (not that there's anything wrong with that). Now you can keep that special moment in your wallet, on a frame on your office desk or on the wall at home or even gift it on any given special occasion, a nearly forgotten tradition of nostalgia and proximity.
SP-2 stands out thanks to the clarity and clearness of its printed pictures, something that we only realize when comparing its prints with the ones of its predecessor and that will also surely be noticed when SP-3 appears a year or two from now, being that the analogic film smooths the pixelization we got so used whenever we print any digital pictures in or home printer.
One of the SP-2 innovations is a rechargeable USB battery that eliminates the bother to search for power cells of its previous version, the design also improved substantially and it is now available in two colors, silver and gold, on a sober and exquisite style.
Besides the mandatory wi-fi connection you need to install Fujifilm's Instax Share application in your smartphone, this app will allow you to edit your pictures through light filters, picture parceling into more than one frame, adding text or backgrounds. On the option to print straight from your social networks, SP-2 gives you the option to immortalize your picture with the date and number of likes it had on the social network when you printed it.
On real time pictures, you have the option to include a couple oddities thanks to current day technology, that meaning you can include the temperature, the degree of humidity in the air and the exact geographic location of the picture you are printing.
Just like with the vinyl revival, the growing demand for organic options that relents us to other times far less practical justifies investments like this by Fujifilm that already developed two portable printers that, for practical purposes, are tiny photographic film developing labs, with the promise of a third upgraded version, when this SP-2 is still a sales success and includes several upgrades at nearly half the price of its original version.
It's palpable that there's an ever growing market for nostalgia, induced on a larger portion by the economic stability of one or more generations that on the days of instant polaroids and vinyl records where still studying and depending on an allowance that only let them dream with these luxuries that, in times gone by, had forbidden prices and where not exactly on the priorities list of any family.
