NATURAL FROM THE ORIGIN

Montiqueijo, a Portuguese brand that has been producing cheeses for 52 years, is the only on with the production from its origin, has registered a total turnover of 5.2 million euros in 2015. The brand from Lousa joined tradition, knowledge, and innovation, and created a range of products that invites us to socialize, and share a table.

For these results, the increase in the sale of its core product, cow fresh cheese, that had a production of 3,345.658 units, equivalent to 960,45 metric tonnes sold, as well as the expansion of the range of products, with focus on new flavours. Among them, we highlight the bars of fresh cheese, with a traditional flavour, and tomato and basil, and rosemary.

Produced with cow's milk, from the homestead in Canha, and manufactured artisanally, the cheeses are available in a unique format, different from the usual round shape, so they can be taken and served, and eaten whole. The body is denser than the traditional fresh cheese, allows for a bigger precision upon cutting, making these cheeses the best allies for the moments of share, and friendship and family gathering. The innovative package allows for the removal of all the whey, even before it is opened, through little cuts in specific areas, duly identified.

Cow cottage cheese is another of the recommended products, as it is very appreciated, especially during the long and warm summer days. Ideal for the ones that wish to reduce the amount of fats in their diet, cottage cheese is a food that is rich in calcium, vitamins (A, B, and D), phosphorus, and potassium. Besides its many health benefits – among which are skin protection, hair, bones, and teeth – cottage cheese furthermore helps the body to recover from physical exhaustion, thanks to the proteins it contains, which are of slow absorption, and because of this, it is adequate for sportspeople.

This product, available in packages of 85gr, and 200gr, can be used in various recipes, from entrées, to desserts, giving them an extra touch of softness and flavour. Besides, it is one of the most recommended snacks to enjoy between meals.

For 2016, the company predicts a growth in the order of 30%, and intends to strongly invest in internationalization. They are already present in Mozambique, Belgium, Switzerland, France and Spain, with a few occasional businesses, and in the last trimester of 2015, they closed a deal with one of the biggest Asian distributors - "Dah Chong Hong Food Mart", to sell their products in China.

"Last year was of sedimentation and for planning new projects. We have grown quite a lot in the area of cured cheeses, and we gave the first steps in structuring internationalization. For 2016, we will continue to place disruptive products in the market, and invest in a wider distribution, not only in Portugal, but also in international markets", explains Dina Duarte, general manager of the company.

Montiqueijo is the only company in this sector that comprises the full cycle of the productive process, and that produces its own milk. They control the whole process of quality and production (from the cereal to feed the cows, to the final product – cheese), having a factory and a homestead with more than 2,000 animals. Technologically speaking, Montiqueijo has the most well-prepared factory in the sector, producing over 40,000 litres per day.

The company of Loures also has an environmental conscious, with an investment of about one million euros in a project that aims to reduce the environmental impact and foment the growth of several production units. They were pioneers in reducing the use of over 50 metric tonnes of plastic yearly, an installing a solar photovoltaic system, destined for self-use, generating 30% of their own energy, which results in a reduction of about 54 tonnes of CO2 every year.

Montiqueijo is a company from the "saloia" region – a Portuguese designation for the country area around Lisbon – was founded in 1963 by the couple Carlos and Ludovina Duarte, that started their business with a little cheese shop in Lisbon, Portugal. Today, they are one of the main Portuguese brands producing fresh, cottage and cured cheeses.
