MOULDING TRADITION

Working with clay might be one of the oldest traditions Mankind has ever created, starting in the Neolithic Era. The first ceramic objects were found in the Czech Republic, and date back to 29,000–25,000 BC. After millennia of perfecting, pottery now is more than art, it is a skill, the one that will always need practice, patience and, of course, passion.

Established in 2012, Tortus is a small atelier, in a very old and historical building in the centre of Copenhagen, and is the place where beautiful and unique pieces are born, crafted by Eric Landon, Master Potter and Designer. The company is a partnership between Eric Landon, Karin Blach Nielsen and Justin Landon, Eric's twin brother.

Eric Landon started his path as a potter at 16, discovering his vocation, and has been refining the technique and forms ever since. He states that it is his focus, and that "one [aspect] cannot evolve naturally without the other". This evolution is very well represented in the photographic essay posted in the Tortus website, entitled "Gestures". The expressive photographs show us a few of the gestures that are used to make pottery, all of them carefully controlled and suited to mould the clay in different forms.

Tortus, whose name means "turtle", is a studio that works as a nursery for creativity and elegance. "Like the noble creature from which we derive our name, we move at our own humble pace", founders say. At Tortus, they create, test, imagine and reimagine, invent and reinvent techniques, both of pottery, and of glazing, the latter of which is conceived by the co-founder, Karin Blach Nielsen. The results are sublime, of an unparalleled elegancy, and timeless beauty.

In Denmark, there is a centenary tradition of producing fine ceramics and original pottery. The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Factory was established in 1775 under the patronage of the Danish Royal Court. Mid-19th-century Denmark was full of small ceramic shops and ateliers, there was approximately one in each village, a few of which gained fame from their collaborative relationship with well-known Scandinavian artists.

At Tortus, they take their inspiration from this Danish pottery tradition, creating beautiful, modern, entirely hand-made ceramic vessels, adapted and influenced by the early masters of Scandinavian pottery. Aware of the responsibility to preserve the craft, every Tortus product, without exception, is conceived and handmade in Copenhagen.
