Leather leader

It's 1453, and the Turks have Istanbul surrounded. The Fatih Sultan Mehmet stayed in a place called Kazlıçeşme, a place that contained plenty of good water, suitable for leather tanning. After Istanbul was conquered, the Sultan reserved this zone for the leather industry, and it remained so for about 500 years.

The leather industry in Turkey, with its 500 years of history, is becoming a leading center in the world leather industry. It occupies a prominent place in the Turkish economy, developing day by day through the combination new technology and its historical background of know-how. Although in the 1970's there were initial efforts to modernize the leather industry, significant progress at a real industrial scale began in the mid-1980's.

This sector's production follows international standards and it is becoming more sensitive to health and the environment. Today there are about 13 industrial leather zones in turkey which enables the use modern technology and the production of environmentally friendly high quality products.

The Turkish leather industry is one of the most significant industries within the Turkish economy, and one of the biggest producers in the world. For the sheep/goat leather production, turkey is the second biggest producer in Europe after Italy and fourth biggest producer in the world after Italy, China and India. Turkey has the biggest production capacity of double face sheepskin leather in the world with 80 million pcs. /year.
