Giovanni Panerai opens his watchmaker's shop on Ponte alle Grazie in Florence: both shop and workshop, and also the city's first watchmaking school, Officine Panerai's history begins here. The shop later moves to its current location in the Palazzo Arcivescovile in Piazza San Giovanni, changing its name to "Orologeria Svizzera" at the beginning of the twentieth century.

A watch-making laboratory, highly specialized since the nineteenth century, supplier of measurement and precision instruments to the Italian Navy in the nineteen hundreds, fine watchmaker and international brand in the twenty-first century. The deep-rooted links with the world of the sea, the true heritage of the Brand, bestow on each watch a sporting character that is unique and authentic, like the history of Panerai.

Panerai's characteristic - pure Italian design loyal to its own tradition and unchanged by time.

A principle echoed by an idea destined to change the history of watchmaking: the crown-protecting lever bridge, the innovation thanks to which Panerai created the first underwater military watch.

A culture made of technical achievements and commitment, which in 2002 led to the creation of the first movement designed and developed in-house by Panerai, the P.2002 - a hand-wound caliber with GMT function and 8-day power reserve, drawing inspiration from the Angelus movement used in the Panerai 1940s models.

The sea represents Panerai's identity and its place of origin. The sea is pure passion, a passion that lives again in Eilean, the Bermudian ketch from 1936 built at the Scottish Fife shipyard and returned to the sea in 2009 thanks to a restoration that took more than 40,000 hours.

MANUFACTURE

2002 was a fundamental year in the history of Officine Panerai. In fact, in the same year that saw the launch of the project for the development of the first in-house movement, Panerai inaugurated its manufacturing plant.

Located on the lake of Neuchâtel, a city with one of the oldest horological traditions in Switzerland, the Panerai Manufacture is the place where all the activities of the brand are carried out, a combination of tradition and innovation where unique, exclusive watches are created.

It was the launch of the P.2002, the first of all the calibres made at the Neuchâtel Manufacture and a tribute to the historic 8-day power reserve conceived by Panerai in the 1940s, that inaugurated a new era for the Florentine brand, an era focused on Swiss fine watchmaking with a collection boasting in-house movements featuring a strong aesthetic and functional identity.

For Panerai, the Manufacture is the synonym of a number of distinctive elements: unmistakable design, loyalty to the history of the brand and an insatiable quest for aesthetic and technical solutions capable of combining simplicity with the highest innovation and technical standards.

To pay tribute to the Swiss horological art, Panerai has reinterpreted in a refined and innovative manner a fine watchmaking complication, the tourbillon (with the P.2005, P.2005/G and P.2005/S Panerai in-house movements), creating watches like Lo Scienziato and l'Astronomo, the technical and manufacturing expression of Officine Panerai.

Officine Panerai's present and future do not only mean the development of high quality, in-house movements, they also mean a search for high-performance, innovative materials that are selected and tested by the Neuchâtel Manufacture through an on-going research and development activity.

Ample space is indeed be given to research and development activities inside the new Officine Panerai Manufacture in Pierre-à-Bot. Its opening completed the progress that has established the Florentine brand worldwide as one of the most important productive expressions of haute-horlogerie sports watches.
