Helsinki

The capital of the world's happiest country, Finland, is a nice surprise that you would'nt want to miss. Located on the earth of the thousand lakes, islands and aurora boreal, Helsinki is currently one of the most innovative cities with the best quality of life.

Helsinki is where everything happens: where the central governments, important buildings, museums, typical markets are located, where are the main shops, local commerce and metropolitan access zones to Finns and tourists circulate and discover this charming city.

Situated on the coast of Finland, Helsinki, is the home to about one million habitants. Highly prepared to provide an excellent living environment, the Nordic city is filled with curious monuments, incredible buildings, amazing technological centers that allow the development of urban innovation and creative incubators, culture, design and gastronomy that merge with Finnish's tradition. Throughout the wide streets of the city, you can also find eclectic gardens, which boast richness and environmental preservation as a result of sustainable policies, reproduced in parks of environmental conservation, a few minutes from the city.

In the Kauppahalli - Old Market of Helsinki - in operation since 1889, you can find the mix of traditions and cultures, in a single bench. Among local products, such as cheese, meat, fish and vegetables and spices from all over the world, the market allows you to get to know Finnish traditions and put them together in a typical dish, such as a Kermainen Lohikeitto, a salmon soup, or a Lihapullat, Finland's classic meatballs. These Finnish delicacies can be found in the typical restaurants and 'gourmet' that extend throughout the capital. One thing is for sure: if you are a food lover, you need to try the Northern European gastronomy.

In the Finnish city, art and architecture are notorious. With a charm worthy of Nordic culture, closed and very distinct, the public buildings are incredible monuments that should be included in your to-visit list during this trip, see examples of the Chapel of Kamppi – Chapel of Silence – built in 2012. Its purpose is to offer calm and tranquility for those who are looking for it, right in the center of the city. Also, the Tamppeliaukio Kirkko – Chapel of Stone – is a demonstration of the capacity and development of Finnish architecture, finished in 1969. Its magnificent acoustics makes it the stage of numerous events linked to classical music. Still for lovers of art and architecture, the Design Museums – Design District Helsinki –- and Architecture – Arkkitehtuurismuseo (Museum of Finnish Architecture), are incredible works and points of cultural interest about the city.

Front line of Smart Cities

The construction of the buildings is modern and elegant, emphasizing clever architectural techniques and solutions that will leave you amazed.

Smart solutions are a very visible reality in the city of Helsinki, and can be found in various works and constructions of the emblematic spaces of the city. By definition, we understand that a Smart City is an intelligent city that associates technology and innovation in favor of social well-being and optimization of the use of resources with the objective of creating the best solutions and infrastructures for citizens.

In Helsinki, the mySMARTife project – Lighthouse Helnsiky – has been developing solutions since 2016 in the field of mobility, IoT, parking, renewable energy, transport, among other areas, with the aim of making the city more and more intelligent and providing the better conditions for its citizens. According to Mikko Martikka – program leader for the city of Helsinki – in a statement to Smart Cities World, "[these urban solutions] can reduce up to 70% of all greenhouse gas emissions", proving that smart solutions are beneficial at various points, spreading to all areas, economy, production of renewable energies, lighting and intelligent systems able to combine energy production and storage, intelligent and electrical transports and the best of all: efficiency at the lowest economic cost.

Modernity and tradition are the keywords of the happiest capital in the world. From there, the most curious will be able to get involved in a unique and very smart environment, allowing a new look and vision about the world: IoT solutions are undoubtedly in the day of tomorrow, bringing the capacity to develop and enhance what we, the modern man, already have. But are we prepared to embrace change for an increasingly intelligent world?

The world's most happy country

Currently considered by the 2018 ONU's World Happiness Report, as the happiest country to live, Finland is an incredible case of perseverance, social growth and economic development. Formerly the "Land of Nothingness", the result of an extreme famine caused by the lack of harvests and the devastation of the cities after a civil war and the wars against the Soviet troops; Finland stood up and affirmed its position in the world through a Welfare State. Based on policies and reforms to the economic system, Finnish governments have fought for private enterprise financing through public enterprises, providing a thriving, transparent and solid growth. With a population of about 5.5 million people, the country of Northern Europe, brings together sustainable conditions and policies for social and financial development, fosters an excellent quality of life, health and education for all, less political corruption and better governance, based on party coalitions that, over time, have been promoting the country's technological and industrial development, democracy, peace, freedom and public security (Finland was considered the safest destination in the world by Travel and Tourism Report, in 2017).
