1898, Berlin. Hans Schwarzkopf, a qualified chemist, opens a tiny drugstore. Dislike for the expensive oils and harsh soaps used to wash hair inspired him to create a better solution. His first product to market is a "powder shampoo" that dissolves in water, an instant hit. Soon, Hans is supplying his 'shampoo with the black head' to every drugstore in Berlin, with a stable international distribution to Holland and Russia. Later, Hans Schwarzkopf introduces the first ever liquid shampoo to the market. The demand led to growth, and driven by his passion for hair and his vision for the industry he founded the very first hairdressing academy in 1927, the "Schwarzkopf Institute for Hair Hygiene".
Throughout the century, the innovations continued to develop, from "Onakali", the world's first non-alkaline shampoo, to the first cold permanent in 1947, a permanent wave without needing to heat hair to 100 degrees. Poly Color, the first ever home color product is also launched, and the first hairspray Taft (the 'liquid Hairnet') was another of the inventions of Schwarzkopf. During the sixties, the brand had grown to become a global force in the salon, consistently creating pioneer products throughout the 70's and 80's.
