Golden Sea of Amber

Amber, the Gold of the North. It is the fossilized resin of pre-historic trees. These segregated the resin, the resin hardened, becoming more resistant, and when the Baltic Sea formed, it took them for a ride. Today they still wash up on the northern coastline, something that happens because amber doesn't sink as other stones in salt water.

Amber can be found in a full range of colors, from white, ivory – also known as bone amber -, through green, and there is even blue amber, which is one of the rarest.

In the Baltic, however, the range goes from golden yellow, to dark brown. It can also be transparent or opaque. There is another factor to add up to its oddness: pre-historic insects would get trapped in the resin, and remain perfectly preserved to this day! This feature is called inclusion, and makes these amber pieces more valuable and demanded than simple amber, with no inclusions of any kind.

Amber is an important part of the Baltic history. Approximately 90% of the amber in the world comes from the Baltic, and for thousands of years it has been considered not only a healing tool, lucky charm, adornments and even as incense. The demand of amber extended to Greece, Rome, and even Egypt, originated the Baltic Amber Road, a trade route that went from the Baltic Sea and the North Sea through Europe to the Mediterranean.

Baltic Amber's healing powers, as well as purification of the mind, body and spirit, is a subject of much emphasis, from historic time to this day. It is said it opens the crown chakra, and stimulates the intellect. It is still used in traditional Oriental, Arabic and Persian medicine. Plus, when rubbed, or touched by fire, it emanates a soft pleasant aroma of pine, which makes it a very likeable incense. It is said that the fact that it contains between 2-8% succinic acid is what distinguishes it from amber from other parts of the world.

The jewelry

Well-crafted amber jewelry lasts forever. Pieces of jewelry crafted with amber have been found with over 3000 years. It was considered a royal gift, and various examples have been discovered, from earrings to bracelets and amber beads necklaces.

Today, there are a number of processing ways to make amber (even) more appealing, and to make it fit for jewelry. By imitating the natural process of "clearing", in which the oxygen contained in the amber is evaporated at higher temperatures, causing a sparkly effect, or by pressing the stone, a technique that bonds together small pieces of amber, called amber dust or sand, by pressing them in the desired shape at a temperature of 320° C. These pieces are not as valuable as natural amber.

Most amber jewels are hand made, and many jewelers like to work with amber due to its warmth. Because it is a relatively soft material, 2-2.5 in Moh's scale, and it has a wide variety of colors and tones, jewelry made of amber can be arranged in beautiful combinations. Amber is a product of nature, and its jewelry with unique inclusions, colors and textures makes each piece unique. Beauty and mystery surround the gem, and make it so much more attractive.
