Global brands for global needs

Henkel is a household name anywhere in the world. The company became well-known for its home and industrial cleaning products, but grew for over more than a century and became a global supplier and leader of brands and technologies.

Since its launch, this branded consumer goods business has grown into a globally active unit with well-known brands, such as Persil, Purex or Pril. For consumers around the world, Henkel's brand names have become an integral part of their daily lives. In its markets of relevance, the Laundry & Home Care business sector enjoys leading positions on a worldwide scale.

The Laundry & Home Care business unit is the cornerstone of Henkel's success story: it all started with a product from this business sector. In 1876, Fritz Henkel founded the company Henkel & Cie in Aachen, Germany. The company's first product was a laundry detergent based on sodium silicate, named "Universal-Waschmittel" (universal detergent).

In 1878, to take advantage of the better transport links and sales opportunities, Henkel relocated his company to Düsseldorf on the Rhine (where the company's headquarters is still located). Düsseldorf was the gateway to the Ruhr region, which became the most important industrial area of the German Empire from the 19th century onward. That year, the first German brand-name detergent appeared: Henkel's Bleaching Soda, an affordably-priced product supplied in sturdy paper bags. Made from water-glass and soda, it was the result of Fritz Henkel's own research.

Henkel has been a family-run business since the beginning. In 1893, Fritz Henkel, Jr. joined the firm as an apprentice. After receiving commercial training he became his father's right-hand man in commercial matters. He put Henkel's brand-name product business on a sound footing, developed its already successful advertising still further and was responsible for the company's field service.

Henkel Beauty Care holds leading market positions worldwide, and its brand-name products business is continuously expanding. The business unit develops, produces and sells numerous successful high-quality products (hair, body, skin and oral), which are available in 150 countries worldwide.

Beauty Care is active in the Branded Consumer Goods as well as the professional Hair Salon business. Henkel Beauty Care stands for brand-name products in the fields of hair colorants, hair styling, hair care, body care, skin care, and oral care. Schwarzkopf Professional is among the world's three leading suppliers of hair salon products.

Henkel Beauty Care Research & Development is a global team of top class scientists identifying and using new technologies and methods to deliver outstanding products to customers and consumers. The diverse team of experts in toxicology, consumer evaluation, analytical, regulatory, and many other fields is located in Düsseldorf and Hamburg (Germany), Scottsdale (USA), Tokyo (Japan), Shanghai (China) and Johannesburg (South Africa).
