Feeding all animals is a important mission
From cattle feed to specialized food used by performance animals, Versele-Laga has a developed a wide range of animal and pet nutrition that answers the needs of breeders and competitors.
Everything started with Prudent Versele, a visionary entrepreneur, who started to produce and market cattle feeds on a small scale in 1932. Less than five years later, he could only continue to meet demand by building a first cattle feed plant in Deinze, Belgium, back in 1937.
The passionate employees who worked for Versele-Laga soon managed to convince the Versele family to also develop mixes for pigeon racing. They were soon followed by products for other sporting animals and pets such as birds, farm animals, horses and dogs.
In the last decades animals increasingly became part of the family and more birds, rodents, dogs and cats were taken into people´s homes. Versele-Laga follows all these market developments very closely with new investments, providing increasingly better answers to the needs and wishes of the owners of pets and performance animals.
The brand produces a wide range of products, each designed specifically for its purpose. Either you need anmal food for your pet rabbit or the premium stallion you enjoy riding, Versela-Laga has the answer.
Horses, birds, dogs, cats, farm animals, pigeons, rabbits, rodents and exotic animals all deserve good nutrition and feeding. The company's products currently feed over 15,000,000 animals annually or one animal every two seconds, using any of the 2.100 products available from its production line. There is something for every animal and every feeding need.
In the exotic category, Versela-Laga produces food for many different animals, like Lamas, Alpacas, Koi fish, pond fish, sturgeon, tortoises or deer. And it's one of the few brands that has complete solutions available to breed and maintain these animals.
Versela-Laga is aware of the importance of projects for the community. Currently the brand sponsors several programs, like Hachiko OWP, in Belgium, where dogs are trained to assist people with motor disabilities or suffering from epilepsy. This training center uses the age-old bond between dogs and humans for that worthy cause.
Both service dogs for handlers with motor disabilities and seizure dogs for people suffering from epilepsy are specifically trained to enable their handlers to perform tasks that were difficult or virtually impossible before. Moreover, assistance dogs open the door towards a more active participation in every day life.
Also, the company believes the generations after us also have the right to enjoy the animals and species that exist today. That is why Versele-Laga likes to take responsibility and support initiatives like Loro Parque Fundación and Weltvogelpark Walsrode.
The Loro Parque zoo, in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain opened its doors in 1972 with 150 parrots and has now grown into a 13.5 ha park that houses parrots and parakeets and many other animals in an as much as possible natural habitat.
In 1994 the non-profit organization Loro Parque Fundación was founded. Since its inception, the foundation has financially supported more than 82 different conservation projects for the conservation of nature and environment around the world (for more than USD$10 million).
Loro Parque Fundación has the world's largest parrots and parakeets collection. More than 4000 birds of 350 different species are housed in the one thousand aviaries of their "La Vera" breeding station. For several species, whose survival in nature is threatened, reserve populations are kept here as a last resort against final extinction.
The Weltvogelpark Walsrode, in Germany, originally began as a hobby of businessman Fritz Geschke to breed pheasants and waterfowl. From 1962, the park experienced a rapid development into a major attraction for nature and animal lovers worldwide and became an internationally respected organization for bird breeding and conservation projects. The park houses more than 4000 birds of over 675 different species.
Versele-Laga works closely with both organizations in developing new products, besides providing financial support and feeding the animals with its products.
