Extraordinary glassmaking

Bohemian glass, sometimes referred to as Bohemia crystal, is glass produced in the regions of Bohemia and Silesia, now parts of the Czech Republic. It has a centuries long history of being internationally recognized for its high quality, craftsmanship, beauty and innovative designs.

<

Glass has been present in the Czech countries from time immemorial. As the historic findings have shown, glass was processed here in a major scale since the time of the Celts already; at the beginning of Christian calendar, the ancient Romans named these countries Boiohaemum after one of the main tribes residing here.

The wealth of sand and wood in the Bohemian basin and its unique position in the centre of the Europe have offered glassmakers exceptional facilities. The origins of the contemporary glassmaking date back to the Gothic era, i.e. the turn of 13th and 14th centuries. Perhaps Venice only may take pride in such a long and uninterrupted tradition.

Hand-cut, engraved, blown and painted decorative glassware ranging from champagne flutes to enormous chandeliers, ornaments, figurines and other glass items are among the best known Czech exports and immensely popular as tourist souvenirs.

The Bohemia Crystal Collection

The Bohemia Crystal Collection represents the best of the rich Czech glassmaking tradition. Few countries in the world can boast of such a wide range of traditional decorating techniques as those that have been used in the Bohemian glassworks. Even though they make use of modern science and technology, which contribute to their improved quality, essentially they rely upon traditions which are hundreds of years old. From the mouth blowing of the raw product, to its finishing and decorating by means of various techniques, the human skill, sense of art and good taste have always been, and remain, essential. This depth of experience, on which the virtuosity and preciseness of the work is based, is a significant precondition of mastering the very specific and demanding production techniques.

The sophisticated techniques inherited from past generations, accompanied by original bohemian glass melting recipes that make use of local materials in the Bohemia region, give rise to products of unparalleled beauty and of extraordinary value. This beauty is based not only on traditional workmanship, but also the development of special methods of production. Be it original high enamel, unique Bohemia cased and overlaid crystal, cased glass, artistic engraving, special-lace cut on crystal or handmade drinking glass and gift items, each article is a masterpiece, the result of a perfect symbiosis between designer and glassmaker.
