Since 1870, the master chocolate makers of Laima have imported cocoa beans from the far-off Bay of Guinea in Africa, applying much love to the process of producing chocolate which has no equal anywhere else in the world.

Laima is among the few chocolate manufacturers in Europe where full production process - from cocoa beans to chocolate, is ensured. Carefully maintained old skills and recipes are supplemented by contemporary production methods. Laima chocolate is made only from high quality Forastero cocoa beans from Gana, Africa. Cocoa beans are specially roasted, ground and tempered to get the unique taste of Laima chocolate. 

Laima is the most famous confectionery brand name in the Baltic, representing the history of Latvian sweets industry throughout several centuries. Recently, Laima together with young and old chocolate fans celebrated its 140th anniversary – Laima is the Latvian sweets legend, successfully combining historical heritage with innovations. The recipes of ancient chocolatiers also give satisfaction to modern consumers – Laima is acknowledged the highest quality brand of Latvia in 2010. Nowadays Laima is the largest manufacturer of sweets in the Baltic with export to more than 25 countries. 

Theodor Riegert, a German entrepreneur, is considered the founder of confectionery industry in Latvia. Having gained experience from travelling across many countries worldwide, in 1870 he opened a company in Riga, Zaļā Street that spread out sweet chocolate aroma. Over the years, Riegert's factory became one of the largest sweet manufacturers in the Baltic, and even Russia. The demand for sweets in Riga increased in a short time when Geginger's factory, founded in 1881, which manufactured nearly everything, from sweets to canned fish, became the most severe competitor. However, the favorite among the population of the First Republic of Latvia was Vilhelms Ķuze, a Latvian entrepreneur, who established his company in 1910. Due to the high quality of his sweets and the excellent advertising ability, the small sweet shop grew into a stable company – Staburadze. 

If V Ķuze was named the king of Latvian confectionery, then Laima, with its history dating back to 1921, should be named the queen. Laima developed rapidly and expanded its activity and by 1930 it employed already 500 people. Its production was sold not only in Latvia, but also in France, England, Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine and elsewhere. In the late 30s, the owners of Laima of those days decided to leave Riga. In 1937 the Latvian government purchased the shares of AS Riegert and Laima and the companies merged.

In 1940, Geginger's factory was renamed Uzvara; Ķuze's Staburadze got the name of 17th June. Uzvara specialised in production of candies; Staburadze made biscuits and cakes, and Laima chocolate and its derivatives. 

After the recognition of independence of Latvia, to support Latvian sweet manufacturers in the free market conditions, consolidation of major Latvian confectioneries has taken place; Laima has become the key sweet manufacturer. Laima is a future-oriented company, and as such, understanding the market situation, maintaining its competitiveness and expanding activity made Laima the major sweet manufacturer in the Baltic at present.
