BEYOND THE GLASS

Today, there is more to the glass industry than the eye can see. As a highly versatile material, glass can be used in numerous everyday utilities, combining aesthetics, easy cleaning, energy saving or simple design solutions. Schott has taken this growing industry much farther.

Of millenary origin, glass is conceived and consumed for increasingly varied uses. Nowadays, the glass industry isn't limited to producing simple glass. This material is able to absorb solar energy, it can maintain the interior environment of a house and it can also show digital information in our cars.

Schott AG, a German company which produces glass and glass-ceramic in over 53 countries, is living proof of this evolution.

Otto Schott, a german chemist dedicated to glass founded the company in 1884, in Jena, and it soon caught the attention of the famous Carl Zeiss and his partner Ernst Abbe. This partnership soon brought a real revolution to the microscope industry as they improved the glass lens over and over, making this science instrument more accurate and reliable. This was still in the late XIX century.

Today, this company is the leader in the production of special glass and glass-ceramics with an immense variety of applications that go from home appliance, pharmaceutical industries, electronics, optics, automotive and aviation. Schott offers a huge portfolio of high-quality products and intelligent solutions as to the usage of glass in all its functions and utilities.

The company employs over 15 thousand people worldwide, and has an annual sales rate volume of 2.5 billion dollars a year.

A world of applications

One of the company products is the flat glass, which can be used in many house related utilities such as door panels, control panels, cooktops, washing and drying machine doors, office furniture, refrigerator shelves, and even mobile phones screens.

Besides being produced from a variety of raw materials, it is thermally toughened to increase its durability and its reliability.

The house furniture sector has been a leading goal for Schott, as the future way of life increasingly take us back into our homes for living, working or relaxing. Therefore, the company also produces highly efficient thermal items such as photovoltaic glass with a large energy storage capacity, as well as protections for fireplaces.

One of the company's new products, Ceran glass-ceramic, is considered to be one of their milestones, as it can be used in most cooktops from many known brands around the world.

However, this high density material can also have other uses in areas like fire protection.

For example, in the lighting and imaging areas, Scott develops and manufactures optical fiber components, both flexible and rigid, as well as hybrid products based on Led and optic fiber technology. This led to the improvement of the optical industry enabling new possibilities for imaging professionals, that go from 3D cinema projectors to microscopes, ultra-sharp phone cameras, solar telescopes, photographic cameras to the production of microchips.

The pharmaceutical industry, which deals with increasingly shrinking budgets, is another area where Schott takes part, with the production of pharmaceutical packaging growing, in order to guarantee that the highly sensitive agents and chemicals are delivered with the utmost security.

The company also provides products for analytical lab services, and produces many of the pharmaceutical business needs, such as syringes, test tubes, and collection and microbial culture ampoules.

In electronics, Schott develops highly hermetically sealed cabling to protect highly sensitive optical components from humidity, temperature, and other physical or chemical effects.

"Glass made of ideas" is the motto to this German manufacturer with more than 130 years of research and development, to whom there is no impossible, only challenges.
