AESTHETIC SURGERY

Several fields of medicine clearly demonstrate the major importance of feeling good inside our skin. And, unlike what happened until the middle of the 20thcentury, it's not unusual, today, to find male persons committed to achieve a certain look that makes them feel better inside the cartridge that is the human body.

<

In this issue, the use of aesthetic surgery, has long stop being an exclusive of people of feminine gender, as it is explained to us by Dr. Carlos Noronha, specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Licensed by the Medicine University of Lisbon (Portugal) in 1993, made the residencies of reconstructive plastic surgery and aesthetics at the Hospital S. José, in Lisbon, having worked in Hospital Egas Moniz and Centro Hospitalar of S. Francisco, in Lisbon. Currently, Dr. Carlos Noronha works at the clinic S. João de Deus, St. Louis Hospital, in Lisbon, in Portugal, and in the clinic in Dreamfinder, in Sacavém and Viva o Corpo clinic in Luanda, Angola.

Having made the boarding school in the area in which he considered to have more vocation – reconstructive plastic surgery and aesthetics, at the Hospital of S. José – worked in casualties and, in the final phase, in reconstructive surgery linked to obesity, therefore, Reconstructive surgery. Then he was earning interest and curiosity for aesthetic plastic surgery. It is convenient to explain that plastic surgery aims to rebuild a part of the body for medical or aesthetic reasons.

Naturally, he directed to the second, which also happened more opportunities to develop work in this aspect, in particular, in post-obesity surgery, in Angola, and which is a profound work the body level.

In S. José Hospital, he didn't get the perception of this branch of medicine being a business, but in Egas Moniz Hospital, he realized the philosophy was a bit different, in that issue and that health and business were more present, even though not in the negative sense.

He claims he doesn't access to specific values, but he is aware that in Portugal aesthetic surgery is not very profitable and, even though it has increased, it is still far from other markets, only referring to Europe. Also, because in Brazil and United States, this kind of surgery is very common and, therefore, the values are surely bigger, even due to the dimension of these countries.

He seeks to give all possible information before stepping into treatment. He likes to be sure the person is aware of what he's about to do and the possible results, because not always what the patient wishes feasible.

He starts by making an assessment and "creating a package" which is suitable to the person's needs and budget, because messing with the body for growing or reducing something, for instance, can mean another part of the body will gain more or less significance and not allowing this to be balanced, making the final result non-satisfactory.

Besides, has he himself handles the materials in order to be safe and certified, thus being sure there will be no additional problem. He always keeps a financial margin for it, and also in case of some post-surgery problem, being, therefore, all treated with transparency, discussed and agreed with the patient. Therefore, he proposes solutions, instead of selling treatments.

In Portugal, statistics show men are increasingly making more plastic surgery treatments, such as gynecomastia, rhinoplasty and blepharoplasty. As for the ladies, they resort more to breast augmentation, and liposuction, following a pregnancy or due to age. In the United States and Brazil, the "trend" is umbilicoplasty (navel correction), and cheiloplasty (lips) because of the exposure to social networks. The so-called "Kim Kardashian silhouette", an American socialite who has a thin waist and a fairly protruding bottom, is very popular in Angola.

He advises, therefore, the interested to get information about the surgeon, training and crediting, because it's more difficult to claim for responsibilities to "specialists" who don't follow the rules of the country in which they operate. Also, accessibility is very important so there may have assistance if a post-surgery complication arises. And choosing a doctor in another country can make this a complicated process. It's important to choose a doctor recommended by someone that has already resorted to their services and nor embark in 'low cost' surgery.

One must not forget that, in the end, it is crucial not to harm the body function.
