A WELL HIDDEN TREASURE

Croatia is a secular country with a rich architectural history preserved to this day. With cutting breath landscapes, the country charms by the green nature and marine blue contrasting the old monuments. Shall we take a look to the pearl of the Adriatic and unveil some of its colors?

By SARA LOUP

Croatia is a country located in Eastern Europe whose capital is Zagreb. It borders on the north-east with Slovenia and Hungary, on the north-east with Serbia, on the east with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and on the south with Montenegro. Its maritime border is with Italy by the Adriatic Sea. Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar and Vis are examples of the best-known places in Croatia that delight their tourists, but beyond these there is an almost infinite Croatia, between peninsulas, islands and rocks, to which you will not be able to resist.

Zagreb is the capital and the largest Croatian city, located between the Sava River and the Medvednica hill. It is the most metropolitan area with the largest population, so it´s where it is concentrated important institutions of the country at an economic level in tourism, major transport networks, scientific institutions and even political administration organs. The city is often overlooked by tourists who go directly to the paradisiacal beaches bathed by the crystalline waters of the Adriatic, away from the strong historical roots of the city. All of Croatia is rich in secular history and architecture that give it an idyllic charm: the old buildings, with a Roman and neo-Gothic construction, surrounded by a superb beach and forest landscape. In the cities of Alta and Kaptol you will find churches, squares and historical buildings that will delight the most curious ones.

A few meters from Zagreb you can find a historical region with fascinating landscapes. In Koprivnica, Varaždin or in Trakošćan Castle, the medieval traces are present in the constructions, from the tiniest details to the most imposing buildings that represent the architecture of the cities.

Continental Croatia is a paradise of tranquility. Between the lush green of the forest and its hills you will find the peace of mind you need to recharge your batteries and relax. However, it is its white sand beaches and blue water that arouse more desire to know the country and its islands.

As the Nobel Prize for Literature, George Bernard Shaw once said, "if you want to see heaven on Earth, go to Dubrovnik". Its natural and urban beauty plays an important role for Croatia, giving it the name of "the pearl of the Adriatic". Its architecture kept the original facades well preserved, showing well the medieval, Renaissance and baroque influences that passed through Dubrovnik. The imposing walls and fortifications that surround the city, have been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Dubrovnik is also known for its fishing and commerce associated with the sea, due to the rich coastal shoreline that, from an early age, kept the city supplied.

Nature reigns in Croatia, with much of its territory protected, parks and nature reserves will not miss to explore as the example of the island which, in its entirety, is considered a Natural Park. Also, the Plitvice Lakes National Park is considered one of the most beautiful places in Croatia and, some say, of the world.

History, religion, culture, nature and landscapes are so fascinating, so that is what Croatia reserves for you. After a period of civil war for its independence most of the parts of this country was damaged, so Croatia has re-emerged and rebuilt itself, keeping the facades and history of its country intact, allowing everyone to know the amazing refuge in the Adriatic. Very similar to Malta and Greece, this European paradise is a 'must visit' of your "to do and travel in life list"!
